Marie C. Heinen

Marie C. Heinen, 82, of rural Kelly, Kansas, died Thursday, August 3, 1995, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Marie Catherine Tappehorn Heinen was born April 10, 1913, near Greeley, Kansas, the daughter of Victor Joseph and Johanna Catherine Schroeder Tappehorn. In 1917, the family moved to a farm near Kelly, and later moved into town. She grew up there, attended St. Bede’s Grade School and worked in the family business, the Farmer’s Union General Store.

On April 25, 1933, Marie married Jacob J. “Jake” Heinen at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. They lived and farmed west of Kelly. In March of 1992, they both entered the Crestview Manor care home in Seneca due to their health. Marie and Jacob had been married over 62 years and had celebrated 50th and 60th wedding anniversaries.

Marie was a member of St. Bede’s Church in Kelly and St. Ann’s Altar Society at the church. She learned to play the piano when she was young from the Benedictine Sisters and continued to enjoy playing the piano throughout her life. She also enjoyed cooking and gardening.

Survivors besides her husband Jacob are four sons, Robert of Silver Lake, James of Axtell, and William and Michael, both of Centralia; two daughters, Mary Ann Heinen and Judith Heinen Coates, both of Topeka; a brother, Joseph “Bud” Tappehorn of Sabetha; a sister, Rose Ida Tappehorn of Kelly; 15 grandchildren and a foster grandson.

She was preceded in death by an infant son, Leon Victor Heinen, on January 1, 1940 and a brother, Frank Tappehorn on February 11, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Victor Tappehorn on April 18, 1951 and Johanna Schroeder Tappehorn on December 27, 1973.

Rosaries were prayed at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Saturday evening by the St. Ann’s Altar Society and on Sunday by the parish and friends. Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly by Fr. Henry Deters, OSB. Music was provided by the church choir. The lector was Heather Coates, granddaughter. Gift bearers were granddaughters Andrea, Heinen and Sarah Heinen. Servers were cousins Russell and Kyle Heinen.

Burial was in St. Bede’s Cemetery. Pallbearers were Benjamin Coates III, Roy Knisley, Douglas Heinen, Gregory Heinen, Joshua Heinen and Brett Heinen, grandsons.

Memorials were designated for St. Bede’s Cemetery or Crestview Manor Activity Fund, and sent in care of the family.
