Jacob J. "Jake" Heinen

Kelly, Kansas

Jacob J. “Jake” Heinen, 86, of rural Kelly, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 5, 1995, at Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca, Kansas. He had been a resident there since March of 1992.

Jacob John Heinen was born March 8, 1909, on a farm east of Kelly, the son of John A. and Anna F. Schurmann Heinen. He grew up there, attended St. Bede’s Grade School in Kelly, and helped on the family farm. In 1930, he started his own farming stockyard operation.

On April 25, 1933, Jacob married Marie C. Tappehorn at St. Bede’s Church in Kelly.

Due to failing health, Jacob and Marie both entered Crestview Manor care home in March 1992. Marie, his wife of 62 years, died a month ago on August 3, 1995. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Leon Victor Heinen on January 1, 1940.

Jacob was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, and was a member of the St. Joseph Society at the church and served on the church council. He also served on the Kelly School Board, the Board of Directors of the Farmer’s Union and was 4-H leader for several years.

Survivors are four sons, Robert Heinen of Silver Lake, James Heinen of Axtell, William and Michael Heinen, both of Centralia; two daughters, Mary Ann Heinen and Judith Heinen Coates, both of Topeka; two brothers, George Heinen of Seneca and Raymond Heinen of Goff; three sisters, Catherine Sextro and Susanna Huerter, both of Seneca, and Marie Conley of Centralia; 15 grandchildren and a foster grandson.

Besides his wife and son, Jacob was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry, Aloysious, Joseph, Leonard, and Edward Heinen; three sisters, Amelia Wilhelm, Elizabeth Wilhelm and Agnes Wilhelm. He was also preceded in death by his parents, John Adam Heinen on October 15, 1962 and Anna Frances Schurmann Heinen on May 14, 1951.

Rosaries were prayed on Wednesday and Thursday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial was offered Friday at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly by Fr. Roderick Giller, OSB. Music was provided by the church choir. The lector was Heather Coates, granddaughter. The gift bearers were Jennifer Heinen and Michelle Heinen, granddaughters. Servers were Brad Wessel and Glen Heinen, family friends. The lay ministers were Esther Enneking and Duane Hermesch.

Burial was in St. Bede’s Cemetery. Pallbearers were Benjamin Coates III, Roy Knisley, Douglas Heinen, Gregory Heinen, Joshua Heinen and Brett Heinen, grandsons.

Memorials were designated for St. Bede’s Cemetery or the Crestview Manor Activity Fund, and sent in care of the family.
