John C. Tanking

John C. Tanking, 60, of Seneca, Kansas, died Sunday, October 4, 2009 at his home.

He was born March 4, 1949 in Axtell, Kansas, the son of Alfred John and Catherine Bernadine Runnebaum Tanking. He grew up on the family farm east of Seneca and attended Sts. Peter & Paul School in Seneca. He also attended special education classes at Nemaha Valley School.

John moved into an assisted-living group home in 1984. He had been employed with the Nemaha County Training Center for 32 years. He enjoyed listening to country music and made a trip to Nashville in 1993. He also enjoyed bowling, the outdoors and Kansas City Royals baseball.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and St. Joseph Society at the church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769, all in Seneca.

Survivors are his three brothers, Regis (Lucille) Tanking of Seneca, Elmer (Anna Lea) Tanking of Tonganoxie, and Jerry (Jill) Tanking of Liberal; three sisters, Alda Frey of Chandler, Arizona, Eileen (Clark) Meyer of Sabetha, and Jerry Ann (Roger) Matzke of Silver Lake; three aunts, Helen Greiveldinger, Alma Runnebaum, and Virginia Runnebaum, all of Seneca; and 18 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alfred J. Tanking on February 9, 1994; and his mother, Catherine B. “Kate” Tanking on February 1, 1990.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 AM Wednesday, October 7, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given for the Nemaha County Training Center or the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital.
