Helen M. Greiveldinger

Seneca, Kansas

Helen M. Greiveldinger, 97, of Seneca, Kansas, died on Saturday morning, April 17, 2010 at Country Place Senior Living in Seneca, where she had lived since November of 2007.

Helen was born on September 14, 1912 to J.B. “Barney” and Viola Winderscheidt Meyer on the family farm near Fidelity, Kansas. As a young girl she attended a country school near Fidelity. She went to Sts. Peter & Paul High School in Seneca, while living with her grandmother. She learned to play the piano from the nuns, and graduated with the class of 1931.

Helen married Anthony Tanking on August 5, 1931 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. As a young couple they lived on a farm north of Seneca. They moved to Marysville when Anthony got a job with the railroad. During the war years Helen helped with the war relief by working for a radio factory in Maryville. Anthony preceded her in death on January 19, 1954.

She remarried on May 29, 1958, to Alfred Bonte at St. Gregory’s Church in Marysville. The couple moved to Hanover, where they owned the local liquor store. Alfred died in November 19, 1960.

She married Henry “Hank” Greiveldinger on April 4, 1964. Helen and Hank were actively involved with the American Legion, attending national conventions. They enjoyed collecting and attending antique auctions. Hank died on June 10, 1997. In 1998, Helen moved to Seneca.

She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, St. John’s Catholic Church in Hanover, and Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. She was a past president of the Terrance Heights Senior Association and played cards with the Hospital Pitch & Bridge Club. Helen loved to play the piano, especially during Mass and family gatherings. She was an active card and bingo player.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna and Gene Turechek of Loveland, Colorado; her son, Ray and Ruthann Tanking of Richmond, Texas; her son-in-law Lowell Elder of Seneca; her brothers Walter Meyer of Topeka and Bernard Meyer of Emporia; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her twin daughters, Lila M. Burdick on March 31, 2000 and Lela M. Elder on December 18, 2009; and her brothers, Albert and Augustine Meyer.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday, April 20, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 AM Wednesday, April 21, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the Marysville cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given in Helen’s memory to the Sts. Peter & Paul Building Fund, and sent in care of the family.
