Vernice L. "Vernie" Haug

Baileyville, KS

09/06/1925 - 04/20/2008

Vernice L. “Vernie” Haug, 82, of Baileyville, KS, died Sunday morning, April 20, 2008 at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born on September 6, 1925, the son of Fredolin (Fred) and Emma Runnebaum Haug, near Baileyville. He attended Plainview Country School and Sacred Heart Catholic School through the 10th grade.

On April 22, 1950, he married Mildred Deters at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca; they celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary. As a young couple they lived southwest of Baileyville for the first six years of their marriage. In 1955, they moved to Horton where they farmed until 1965. At that time, Vernie’s parents wanted to retire, so he and his family returned to take over the family farm. In 1990, Vernie and Mildred moved to Baileyville; however, Vernie remained active on the farm with his son John.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville, the Baileyville Knights of Columbus #13087, the Center Township Board, and the Black Vermillion Watershed Board.

He was a good-natured man who enjoyed taking care of the land, farming, and tending to his cattle. He never turned down the opportunity to play cards, and visit with friends and family.

He is survived by his wife of the home; four sons, Larry of Leawood, KS, Dan of Austin, TX, Tim of Topeka, and John of Baileyville; three daughters, Jean Dummermuth of Marysville, Jane Haug of St. Joseph, MO, and Kathy Rethman of Topeka; siblings, Gilbert Haug of Manhattan, KS, and Hope James of Cherokee Village, AR; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Andrew Haug on July 9, 1994; and siblings Albertus Haug on April 6, 1917, Cletus Haug on January 4, 1915, Marie Haug on January 21, 1921, Kenneth Haug on February 11, 1923, Richard Haug on November 17, 1924, Loyola Haug on December 22, 1936, Elmerina Broxterman on June 27, 1989, Kathleen Cliggett on May 2, 2000, Elsie Rethman on April 23, 2001, and Virgil Haug on February 1, 2003.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Tuesday, April 22, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Baileyville. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials can be given in Vernie’s memory for Sacred Heart Church and Cemetery, St. Benedict Abby, or Mount St. Scholastica, and may be sent in care of the family.
