Raymond Deters, 87, of Baileyville died on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Raymond was born on March 25, 1929, the son of Bernard A. and Anna Wiltz Deters of rural Baileyville, the 4th of 14 children. He attended school in Baileyville, and worked on the family farm. He served his country proudly in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1953 during the Korean War and most of his duties were on the front line. While he was serving overseas, his mother died and he was sent home for his mother’s funeral and later discharged. After serving his country he returned to Baileyville and continued to farm with his father.

On April 22, 1954 Raymond married Dorothy A. Walters at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning. As a young couple they farmed south of Baileyville for a couple of years; then moved to Vermillion for four years. In 1962, they moved to a farm east of Seneca; and then in 1973 they bought the farm south of Seneca residing there until his passing.

He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21. He was a past clerk of Mitchell Township. Raymond had many interests in life including, watching his kids in their sports activities, cards, hunting, fishing and farming.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy of the home; his children, Carl (Frances) Deters of Topeka, Kathleen Houser of Topeka, Susan (Galen) Huninghake of Baileyville, Thomas (Julene) Deters of Baileyville, Geraldine (Stephen) Staley of Centralia, Wayne (Stacy) Deters of Springfield, MO, Marvin (Danita) Deters of Manhattan, Betty Deters of Seneca and Vern (Gail) Deters of Seneca; two sisters, Alicia Burdick of Sabetha and Aurea Schmitz of Seneca; five brothers, Dwaine Deters of Seneca, Lester Deters of Centralia, LeRoy and Bernard Deters both of Baileyville and Gene Deters of Gravois Mills, Missouri; 24 grandchildren; and 11great-grandchildren.

Preceding Raymond in death were his parents; daughter, Connie Diane Deters on April 8, 1959; his brothers, Merlin Deters on September 23, 2006, Urban Deters on July 23, 2008 and Alvin J. Deters on August 30, 2009, an infant brother; and two sisters, Shirley Banks on July 14, 2008 and Lucille Boeckman on August 6, 2012.

Full military honors will be provided by the Seneca Memorial Post #7458 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Earl W. Taylor Post #21. A flag line will be provided by the American Legion Riders Post #21. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 AM Saturday, May 14, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Friday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, next to his daughter Connie, in Baileyville.

Memorial contributions may be given to Sacred Heart Cemetery in Baileyville, and sent in care of the family.
