Mathias J. "Matt" Lierz

Seneca, KS

Mathias J. “Matt” Lierz, 96, of Seneca, KS, died Sunday, January 11, 2004, at Crestview Manor care home in Seneca.

He was born June 13, 1907, in Seneca, the son of Peter and Mary Kramer Lierz.

On April 22, 1931, he married Mary Bergman at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. They lived and farmed near Seneca. His wife Mary died on November 15, 1969. Matt was a farmer and a stockman until 1973 when he moved into his new home in Seneca.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Mathias, on February 22, 1936; by five brothers, Leo, Paul, Vincent, Sylvester, and Joe Lierz; and three sisters, Clara Broxterman, Bertha Heiman, and Mary Mulryan.

He was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, and the St. Joseph Society at the church in Seneca.

Survivors are two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Norman Rethman) and Laverne (Mrs. Arlen Henry), both of Seneca; a brother, Raymond Lierz of Baileyville; a sister, Helen (Mrs. Joe Heiman) of Baileyville; seven grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a step great-grandson; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Tuesday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Monday.

Memorials may be given for Sts. Peter & Paul School, and sent in care of the family.
