Mary W. Wietharn

Seneca, Kansas

Mary W. Wietharn, 92 of Seneca, Kansas, died on Friday, May 27, 1977 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. She was transferred there a day earlier from Countryview Estates care home, where she had been a resident since January 24.

Mary was born north of St. Benedict, Kansas on July 3, 1884 to Frank and Agnes (Rottinghaus) Tangeman. After attending country school and growing up in the St. Benedict community, she married Henry F. Wietharn on February 16, 1909, at St. Mary’s Church in St. Benedict. They farmed a mile west of Seneca. Her husband Henry preceded her in death on March 10, 1958.

After her husband’s death, Mary moved into Seneca where she lived until 1965. For about 10 years she lived with her daughter Rose and husband Lawrence Kramer in Baileyville. She also lived a year with her daughter Leona and husband Alvin Lueger in Seneca.

Mary was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca and St Ann’s Altar Society at the church. She was a devoted wife and mother, who enjoyed crocheting and all kinds of flowers.

Survivors include a son, Vincent and wife Rita Wietharn of Everest, Kansas; three daughters, Ethel and husband John I. Rottinghaus of Seneca, Leona and husband Alvin Lueger of Seneca, and Rose and husband Lawrence Kramer of Baileyville; a brother, Frank Tangeman of Seneca; a sister, Sister Carissa Tangeman, S.S.P. of Cincinnati, Ohio; 29 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son and daughter.

Rosaries were prayed on Sunday and Monday evenings at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, May 31, at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, con-celebrated by Fr. Albert Wietharn of Wamego, Fr. Sylvester Wietharn of Horton, Fr. Carl Dekat of Baileyville, and Fr. George Klasinski of Marysville. The homily was delivered by Fr. Sylvester.

Burial was at the church cemetery. Active pallbearers were grandsons John Rottinghaus, Jerry Wietharn, Emmett Kramer, Galen Lueger, Leroy Rottinghaus and Jim Wietharn. Honorary pallbearers were grandsons Kenneth Kramer, Francis Rottinghaus, Eugene Rottinghaus, Ed Lueger, and Steve Lueger. Servers were Cletus Kramer, Tom and Gene Lueger and Ron Rottinghaus. Jim Lueger was lector.
