Glenn L. Conway

Glenn L. Conway, 89, of Centralia, KS, died Saturday, October 26, 2002, at Eastridge Care Home. He had been a resident there since March 27, 1991.

He was born January 18, 1913, at Ridgeville Corners, OH, the son of Frank and Laura Harmon Conway. The family moved to Emporia, KS, when he was a young boy. He graduated from high school in Emporia and earned a teaching certificate at the Emporia Normal School, which later became Emporia State Teacher’s College. He taught at Hamilton High School in Kansas for several years. During World War II, he moved to Wichita to work for Boeing Aircraft in engineering design.

After the war he moved to Chicago where he worked at a company developing an automatic bottling machine. He also lived in Bonner Springs. In 1959 he and his wife, Viola, built the Blue Stem Bowling Alley in Emporia, which they owned and operated until their retirement in 1974. They moved to Miami, OK, and in 1991 to Centralia. Glenn became a resident of the care home due to failing health.

He married Grace Hollingshead at Emporia. She preceded him in death. On November 19, 1955, he married Viola Hybskmann Friley in Seneca, KS. She also preceded him in death on May 31, 1998.

He was a member of the Congregational Church and the Masonic Lodge, both at Emporia.

Survivors are a daughter, Loretta Hale of Adrian, MO; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul Conway and Frank Conway; two sisters, Irene Kerr and Lillian Riley.

Graveside inurnment was held on November 9 at the Seneca City Cemetery.
