Donald M. Spielman

Seneca, Kansas

Donald M. Spielman, 83, of Seneca, died August 1, 2018 at his home.

Don was born on September 14, 1934 the son of Albert and Dorothy Mergenmeier Spielman, the second of three children. He attended eleven years at St. Peter and Paul school and then graduated in 1952 from Gardner High School while living with his aunt and uncle.

He served in the United States Navy from 1953 to 1957 on the destroyer USS Callaghan in the Pacific Ocean during the end of the Korean War. He had earned the rank of FT3. He had also served on the USS Colhan.

He married Marilyn Jones in Gardner, Kansas on October 23, 1954, and was blessed with five sons. While in Gardner, he worked for Andy Moynagh doing construction in the Kansas City area as a heavy equipment operator before having his own business.

Upon his divorce, he found employment in California with the Operators Engineers Union. There he met and married Marlys Dahl who helped raise their combined family of four sons and her daughters and son and a nephew. Upon Marlys death, he returned to Seneca to work for Adams Township as a road maintainer and for area farmers with his backhoe.

Don enjoyed fishing, hunting, visiting, cards and going to the casino. He loved spending time with his family and hi good friend Ida Rose. His love of country was shown as a active member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Proceeding him in death are his parents, his 6-month-old son Andrew, ex wife Marilyn and Marlys, step son Dirk and two brothers-in-law’s Edward Frehe and Hubert Lackey.

Don is survived by his sons, Tim Spielman of Seneca, Alan Spielman of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, Matt (Julie) Spielman of Braselton, Georgia and Bernie (Kim) Spielman of El Portal, California; Step-daughter Roxie (Jerry) Flyod of Spring Hill, Kansas. Teo sisters Elaine Frehe and Marlene Lackey both of Seneca along with many cousins. 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great- grandchildren.

Memorials can be given in Don’s memory to V.F.W. and or the American Legion, and sent in care of the family.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM Friday, August 3, 2018 at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM Saturday, August 4, 2017 at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Inurnment will be at a later date.

    Don was a great person. Used to see him almost every Friday night at Sac Fox Buffet. Loved his shrimp and ice cream. We have and will miss him.
