Alphonse H. Haverkamp

Alphonse Henry Haverkamp, 94, of Kelly, KS, died early Thursday morning, December 30, 2010 at the Life Care Center of Seneca, where he had been a resident since December 2003.

He was born on April 14, 1916 to Frank and Mary A. Stegeman Haverkamp, the 11th of 12 children. He grew up in the Kelly community and attended St. Bede’s Catholic School.

Alphonse married Raphaela Bergman on April 19, 1939 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. They lived west of Kelly, where he was fortunate enough to have farmed for over 50 years. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1999. Raphaela preceded him in death on January 31, 2000.

Alphonse enjoyed playing cards, having visitors and being a devoted and loving father and grandfather, who appreciated being apprized of his family’s activities.

He was a member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly and the St. Joseph Society.

He is survived by his children, Barbara Seabright (Ralph) of Kent, WA, Janice Williams (Ed) of Marietta, GA, Sharon Sidor (Dave) of Lakewood, WA, Rosie Stine of Universal City, TX, Carol Haverkamp (Linda) of Leawood, KS, and Thomas Haverkamp (Deb) of Seneca; a sister, Alma Holthaus of Centralia; a sister-in-law, Margaret Haverkamp of Seneca; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Dave Stine; sisters, Anna Boeding, Dora Steinlage, Mary Haug, Josepha Steinlage, and Rose Bergman; and brothers, George, Lawrence, Frank, Edwin and Joseph Haverkamp.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 pm on Tuesday, January 4, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Wednesday, January 5, at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials can be given in Alphonse’s memory for St. Bede’s Church, or St. Bede’s Cemetery fund or to the Life Care Center, and sent in care of the family.
