Alice B. McGinty

Seneca, KS

Alice B. McGinty, age 92, of Sabetha, KS, formerly of Seneca, died Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Apostolic Christian Home in Sabetha.

She was born August 28, 1917, on a farm north of Woodlawn, KS, the daughter of Charles F. and Grace A. Shaffer Richard. She attended Morning Star Country School. In 1929 her family moved to a farm north of Netawaka. She attended the Netawaka schools and attended two years of high school. She helped on the family farm, worked at the Goff Hotel in Goff, KS and also in homes helping with children.

On June 6, 1947 she married Emmett McGinty at Longview, WA. She worked in a hotel while living in Longview. In 1948 they moved to Scott City, KS for about a year, then the couple moved to Wichita. Alice babysat for a family while Emmett worked at a dry cleaners in Wichita. In 1956 they moved to Seneca where they purchased ABC Cleaners. They operated the cleaners for 22 years, retiring in 1978 when they sold the business. Her husband Emmett died January 15, 1981, due to a heart attack. In 1981 she moved to Terrace Heights in Seneca, then in 1995 she moved to Midtown in Sabetha. She later moved to Cobblestone and then later to Apostolic Christian Home.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Seneca, United Methodist Women Organization, Business Professional Women for 18 years, Nemaha County Historical Society, and the VFW Auxiliary.

Survivors include a daughter, Sonja Diane and husband Don Hicks of Sabetha, KS; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by five sisters, Nellie Richard, Mary Grace Hawley, Carrie Williams, Theda Volz and Phyllis Lee; and three brothers, Gerald, Raymond and George Richard.

Funeral service will be 10 AM Wednesday, Septemeber 9, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Family will meet with friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Memorial contributions may be given for the Seneca United Methodist Church, and sent in care of the family.
