Leonard H. Osterhaus

Seneca, Kansas

Leonard H. Osterhaus, 37, of Seneca, news reached Seneca that Leonard was tragically killed in Kansas City, on April 16, 1958, with the folks finding hard to realize was the death of Leonard Osterhaus, a Seneca Contractor and builder, family man who leaves his wife and nine children in addition to his parents and brother and sisters.

Leonard was born on October 22, 1920, north of Seneca, the son of Bernard J. and Pauline Runnebaum Osterhaus. Leonard was 37 years 5 months and 25 days old at the time of his death. Leonard attended a country school north of Seneca called the Rock School.

Leonard Osterhaus and his force of workmen have been busy at three of more construction jobs in Seneca presently under way; the new Ed Becker home, The remodeling of Robert Vardy home that was damaged in a fire; the office building of Winterscheidt Milling Co.

He had been very active in building in this area for several years as a highly reputable contractor it was believed he put up 11 new homes in one year. He built the new American Legion that was just built last year.

The Osterhaus’ were married on June 6, 1946, at St, Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. He married Adelgund (Ally Rose) Rettele.

Leonard’s wife is the former Adelgund (Ally Rose) Rettele, daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth Rettele of Seneca and the late William Rettele.

They have seven sons and two daughters. The boys are Alan, Leon, Terry, Glenn, Steven, Kim and Gary; the girls are Janelle and Beth.

Besides his wife and children Leonard leaves his parents, B.J. Osterhaus of north Seneca, his brother and sisters; Gilbert Osterhaus of Seneca, Lucille wife of Donald Winkler of Seneca, Bernice the wife of Anthony Rettele of Centralia, Edith the wife of William Kongs of Wetmore and Edna Mae the wife of Joe Love of Seneca.

The rosary was prayed on Thursday and Friday evening at the Lauer Funeral home in Seneca. The mass was held at Sts. Peter and Paul church at 9:30 A.M. on Saturday, April 19, 1958.
