04/07/1938 - 08/25/2023

Russell Joseph Haverkamp, 85 of Baileyville, KS, died Friday, August 25th, 2023, peacefully at his home in Baileyville.

Russell was born on April 7th, 1938, at the Axtell Hospital, the son of Peter and Amanda (Heiman) Haverkamp. He grew up on a farm North of Baileyville. Russell attended grade school and graduated from Baileyville High School in 1956. Russell served in the National Guard after high school for 8 years.

On April 11th, 1961, he married Mary Ann Deters at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict, KS. The couple lived on the family farm North of Baileyville that they purchased in 1973.  To this union two children were born, Theresa and James. The couple celebrated 62 wonderful years of married life.

Russell loved his family very much. He was always willing to help them in any way. From helping them mow their lawn, fixing bicycles, airing up any balls for the grandkids, or picking them up from daycare. He would take the grandkids to rodeos and parades. He often showed his grandkids the joys of being a farm kid such as playing in the silage pile, riding in the tractor, and giving them rides on his horse.

Russell enjoyed sports. He loved coaching his son baseball, watching his kids and grandkids play sports, and, as of late, his great grandchildren. Some of his favorite teams to watch are the Kansas City Royals, Kansas State Wildcats, and the Kansas City Chiefs.

Russell enjoyed many trips to Branson with his wife, Mary Ann. They enjoyed playing cards with family, friends and their “Taco Tuesday” card group.

They say farmers never retire and this is true of Russell.  He visited the farm daily, always looking to help until the day he passed.  He especially enjoyed putting up hay.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter on May 15th, 1974, and Amanda on December 19, 1994.  A sister, Beryl Ann Holthaus on August 22, 2013, and a great grandson, Carson James Ringer on July 20th, 2020.

    Mary Ann,

So sorry to hear of your family’s loss. I’m sure he went as he desired, at home and not spending months or years in a nursing home.

Some of our kids, and some of Russell’s grandkids, were in the same class at B & B. Russell, Cletus Broxterman, and my dad, Burton Huerter, usually sat together watching high school games through the years cheering them on. The kids would refer to them as the Three Amigos. Russell and Mary Ann always opened their home to our kids. They were ‘Baileyville Grandparents’ to our kids. He was definitely one of the good ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
