JoAnn D. Deters

Seneca, Kansas

06/18/1933 - 05/28/2021

Joann D. Deters, 87, of Seneca, died on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Life Care Center.

JoAnn was born north of Marysville on a farm belonging to her parents, Lawrence and Carlene Stroemer Travelute, on June 18, 1933. The family moved to Bremen and JoAnn attended Deer Creek Country School, before attending St. Gregory’s Catholic School. She graduated from the eighth grade; and attended a boarding school in Paola for a few years.

On January 27, 1955 she married Alvin Deters at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Marysville. The couple farmed southwest Baileyville and raised cattle, hogs and chickens. They celebrated 54 years of marriage, before Alvin’s death August 30, 2009. Shortly after becoming a widow, JoAnn made Country Place Living in Seneca her home.

She was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the St. Ann’s Altar society in Baileyville. JoAnn enjoyed embroidery work and knitting, especially knitting baby booties to give them away. She liked playing Bingo and frying the best fried chicken. Her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her the most joy. She was always delighted by her birthday gifts, stating the gift was just what she wanted.

The ultimate gift for her, is just what she wanted, to go home to her husband and parents.

Survivors are two sons, Doug and Gary Deters, both of Baileyville; two daughters, Colette (Ken) Hermesch and Theresa (Scott) Rokey, both of Seneca; a brother Harold (Rosemary) Travelute of Scottsdale, Arizona; two granddaughters, Emily and Erin and 3 great-grandchildren.

Preceding Joann in death were her parents, her husband Alvin and her sister, Kathy Leiker on September 2010.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM Monday, May 31, 2021, at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM on Sunday at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be given for Sacred Heart Catholic Church and/or COINS for a Cause, and sent in care of the family.
