Gerald F. Mathewson

Seneca, Kansas

Gerald Francis Mathewson, 91, of Seneca, died on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Gerald was born on May 3, 1928 to Frank and Nola McDonnell Mathewson. He attended Blue Star School and Sts. Peter and Paul High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War.

On September 26, 1953 Gerald married Mildred Heinen at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly.

As a young man, he was employed at Kissick Ford Motors in Seneca. Gerald and Mildred moved to Topeka and he was employed by the VA Medical Center in Topeka for 35 years as a Medical Machine Technician in the Lab. In 1998, the couple returned to Seneca. Mildred passed away on October 12, 2018.

Gerald was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and the St. Joseph’s Society, all in Seneca; and a former member of Most Pure Heart Catholic Church in Topeka. His memberships also included the Knights of Columbus, the VFW and the American Legion Post #21, all in Seneca, KS. Gerald enjoyed lawn care, growing flowers- especially roses, and woodworking.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 65 years; and a brother, Kenneth Mathewson.

Gerald is survived by siblings, Max Mathewson of Kansas City, Marilyn (Dave) Koelzer of Ozawkie, Kansas, Donna Stewart of Indiana and Ruth Gapeke of Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 A.M. on Friday, May 10th at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly. Burial will be in Sts. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church Cemtery in Seneca.

Memorials are for Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, sent in care of the family.
