Dorothy Brokamp

Seneca, KS

Dorothy Brokamp, 103, of Seneca, KS passed away on Friday August 11, 2017.

She was born on January 8, 1914 on the family farm south of Kelly, daughter of August and Bernadine Kuhlman Brokamp. She grew in the Kelly community and attended St. Bede’s School at Kelly.

Dorothy lived on the family farm, helping to take care of her mother along with her sister, Emma and brothers, Frank and Joe. A niece, Mary Ann Brokamp Henry of Seneca was raised in the family home.

In her early working career, she worked various jobs in Kansas City, KS traveling back and forth by train. She started working at St. Margaret’s Hospital in 1941. She worked 41 years as a payroll clerk retiring February 9, 1983 at the age of 70.

She enjoyed traveling with many friends to various countries like Australia, Ireland, and Rome to name just a few. She also enjoyed playing Rummy-o, Dominoes and Kings on the Corner, with family and friends. She worked countless puzzle books to keep her mind sharp. She crocheted afghans, lap afghans and kitchen towels and grew beautiful African Violets.

On April 28, 2008, she moved to Country Place Assisted Living. She had failing eyesight and hearing. She was walking with her walker every day until her recent fall, when she broke her hip.

Many people were amazed at the things she could remember, when visiting with family and friends and she could stump you with trivia questions.

Dorothy was like a mother to Mary Ann (Bob) and like a grandmother to her family. The kids adored her.

Survivors include her niece, Mary Ann (Bob) Henry and family and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, August and Bernadine; brothers, Joe, Aloy, Edwin and Frank; and sisters, Emma Brokamp, Sister Edna Brokamp O.S.B. and Mary Steinlage. Also, by her best friend for over 60 years, Catharine Gabel.

The rosary will be prayed on Sunday, August 13th at 2:00pm at Lauer Funeral Home.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, August 14 at 10:30am, at St. Bede’s Catholic Church in Kelly, KS. Burial in Kelly Cemetery.
