Cletus B. Rottinghaus

Seneca, Kansas

Cletus Benedict Rottinghaus, 92, of Seneca, died on March 5, 2024, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca surrounded by his wife and children.

Cletus was born March 15, 1931, on a farm near St. Benedict to Tony and Nora Olberding Rottinghaus. Cletus attended Belville School District 56 for four years, then attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in St. Benedict, graduating from high school in 1948. On January 16, 1952, he was inducted into the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. He achieved the rank of SGT in November 1953. He was assigned to the 9th Mar Cores Dist. Chicago 4, Ill. Cletus was discharged on January 15, 1954, from SerCo. H&SBn. MCB. Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. After his was discharged he attended St. Benedict’s College in Atchison.

On January 20, 1958, he married Marceil Haug at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in St. Benedict. They lived and farmed north of Centralia until 2016 when they retired and moved to Seneca.

Cletus was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca, St. Joseph Society and the American Legion Post 0216. He loved coaching and umpiring baseball, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

Cletus was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Joyce Anderson, and his brother, Adrian Rottinghaus.

Cletus is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marceil; a son Lynn Rottinghaus of Wichita; a daughter Kay (Mark) Greenwell of Houston Texas; twin grandsons, Connor and Trey Greenwell. Other survivors include his brothers, Lyle, Galen and Ivan all of Seneca; Jerry of Bern; Emmett of Westmoreland; Eldon of Ozawkie and two sisters, Marie Eagan of Axtell and Edna Uruhart of Silver Lake.

A rosary will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Monday, March 11, 2024, at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.   The burial will be in the church cemetery in Seneca.

Memorials can be given in Cletus’s memory to Sts. Peter and Paul Church and or Nemaha Valley Community Hospital Building Fund and sent in care of the family.
