Benedict F. Steinlage, 83, of Corning, KS, died Friday November 30, 2001, at the Community Hospital in Onaga. He was treated for esophageal cancer a year ago and recently was diagnosed with metastasis to the liver.

He was born June 17, 1918, on a farm southeast of Kelly, KS, the son of Joseph J. and Agnes Niehues Steinlage. Benedict attended St. Bede’s School in Kelly and helped on the family farm.

On August 26, 1941, he married Josephine E. Boden at St. Boniface Church in Tipton, KS. They lived northeast of Corning. He was a lifelong farmer and stockman. Later he also worked in several locations for the Hamm Rock Quarry. His wife Josephine preceded him in death on November 20, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a son, Roger Steinlage on April 12, 1995; and a great-grandson, William James Anderson on July 7, 1997.

He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Corning, where he had served on the church board.

Survivors are six sons, Leroy, Duane, and Keith Steinlage, all of Topeka, James Steinlage of Olathe, KS, Daniel Steinlage of Lawrence, KS, and Alan Steinlage of Kansas City, MO; four daughters, Darlene Setter of Arlington, VA, Maxine Wiechert of Topeka, Louella Talley of Corning, and Marceil Hasenkamp of Soldier, KS; a brother, Frank Steinlage of Seneca; and a sister Mary Steinlage of Kelly; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, son, and grandson, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Eberhard, Henry, Lambert and Aloysius “Aloy” Steinlage.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 AM Monday, December 3, at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rosaries will be prayed at 2 & 7 PM Sunday at the church in Corning.

Memorials may be given for St. Patrick’s Church or St. Patrick’s Cemetery, and sent in care of the family.
