Rose M. McGeeney

Seneca, Kansas

04/16/1927 - 04/29/2023

Rose Mary McGeeney, 96, of Seneca, Kansas passed away peacefully on April 29, 2023, at Crestview Nursing and residential Living in Seneca.

Rose was born April 16, 1927 in Axtell, Ks. The daughter of Pete and Mae Eagan.  She attended St. Michaels Grade School and graduated from Axtell High School in 1945.  After graduation from high school, Rose attended St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, Ks and received her teaching certificate.

Rose then began her many years in the education field, epitomizing the true definition of “teacher”.  Her 60-year teaching career began at Woodlawn Grade School in a one room schoolhouse.  She continued her career at Sts. Peter and Paul School, teaching at both the high school and grade school for the next 42 years.  Not only did Rose teach, she also was very active in the school community, including pep club sponsor at Sts. Peter and Paul for 25 years.  Her former students enjoyed sharing the importance of the typing skills she taught them and how they always loved to gather on Saturdays to staple the church bulletin.  Rose loved her students, and everyone loved “Mrs. McGeeney”.

After retiring from Sts. Peter and Paul, she began working at Nemaha Valley Grade School/Nemaha Central for 18 more years.  At the age of 85, Rose retired again. What a life of dedication to education and children.

On August 23,1949 Rose married LeRoy McGeeney.  She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and St. Ann’s Altar Society.  Rose was preceded in death by her husband LeRoy and a son in law Mark Rettele; 7 sisters and a brother.  Survivors are two sons, Terry McGeeney (Sue) of Leawood, Kansas and Kent McGeeney (Sarah) of Overland Park, Ks.; two daughters, Dianne Rettele (Terry Newell) of Indio, California and Deb Olberding (Rick) of Basehor, Ks.  Rose has 1 sister, Mary, who still survives.  Rose is also survived by 10 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild due in October.  Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light in her eyes.  She never missed a sporting event or any occasion that she could share with her grandchildren.

Visitation will start at 12 P.M. on Wednesday at the Lauer Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 A.M. on Thursday, May 4, 2023, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Seneca, Kansas.  A Rosary will be prayed at 10:30 A.M., before the funeral Mass.  Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be given for a scholarship fund that will be set up in Rose McGeeney’s honor and sent in care of the family.

So many memories come to mind when I think of Mrs. McGeeney. Stapling bulletins, the sound and smell of the mimeograph machine, learning to type and later teaching along side of her. She was definitely one of a kind! Rest in peace my dear friend! You were loved by many!

Kevin, Danny, and I feel very fortunate that we were able to visit with our beloved Aunt Rose when we were in Seneca last September. Although her body had become frail her mind was still quite strong and she was in great spirits! I believe her mind stayed sharp because of her decades of service to so many kids in her career. As was commented above “A life well lived.” Much love and many thoughts and prayers are sent from Arizona!

Many, many great memories of caring for Rose at her home, helping her keep it “tidy” and immaculate as she always wanted it to be. Nothing out of place in her home!! Also as a St. Peter and Paul high school student Rose was my typing teacher and as a cheerleader she was always caring for us in that role also as our Sponsor. After I graduated from St. Peter and Paul and located back in Seneca to raise a family Rose would call for me to assist with the cheerleading competitions at SPPS as I was head cheerleader for several years and she knew my love of cheerleading and working with the students. She was so devoted to SPP School and the students always striving for the best in each student she taught. When I cared for her at her home we would reminish of those days of her devoting herself to the SPP Church bulletin each week meeting the deadlines. A “special wall” in her home was dedicated to her time spent at SPPS with many plaques given to her for her retirement awards. Lovely lady, lovely wife and mother to some special McGeeney kids and grandkids that I also love dearly. May you all be at peace with with Rose’s passing. She definitely lived a full life of giving to us all. Thank You Rose McGeeney for being such a great friend and confidant over the years. I was so happy to be part of your later years of caring for you. Betty Haug

Sincere condolences to the family at the loss of Rose. Mrs McGeeney is someone I remember so fondly from SPPS grade school, as the typing teacher and a substitute for others. She was a delight and I adored her. I suspect she figured out the times we hoodwinked her into giving us a few spelling words for our tests. Always smiling and always kind. She will be in my prayers, along with her family.
