Janet B. Haverkamp, 86, of Baileyville, Kansas died on Saturday, March 16, 2019 at the Crestview Nursing and Residential in Seneca.

Janet was born on January 25, 1933, at home, in Hurlinger, Missouri to Gilbert and Letha (Cooper) Wiedmaier. She attended elementary school in a one room school house and graduated from High School in Clarksdale, Missouri. She attended college at Mount Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas receiving a teaching certificate. She taught grades 1-8 in a one room school house in Ree Heights, South Dakolta, near her aunt and uncle for several years. She then moved on to teach in elementary school in Baileyville, Kansas, to move closer to her parents. It was there that she met the love of her life, Aloysius Haverkamp, Jr, at a dance.

They married on October 27, 1956 in Hurlingen, Missouri and enjoyed 64 years together. They honeymooned in Colorado visiting Pike’s Peak, Garden of the Gods, and Estes Park. Blessed by love and seven children, Janet and Al farmed outside of Baileyville, Kansas.

After raising her children, Janet attended Kansas State University to pursue degrees of her own. She had a passion for learning and received both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Elementary Education with a reading resource specialty. She taught at many local elementary schools as a substitute teacher.

Janet enjoyed reading, sewing, embroidery, making quilts, and gardening. She took great pride in taking care of her family and did much canning and freezing to make her family self-sustainable. She took great joy in later years in visiting family and traveled to places such as England, Wales, Germany, Arizona, Kentucky, Ohio, South Dakota, Texas, and Mexico.

She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed listening to Royals baseball as well as KU and K-State football and basketball. She would often describe games play by play to her children.

She was active throughout the years at Sacred Heart Parish in Baileyville, as a member of the Altar Society and in recent years regularly attended Senior Citizen’s luncheons. She was formerly an active member of LCBA and the VFW Women’s Auxiliary.

She is preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, James and Francis Wiedmaier.

Janet is survived her husband, Al; seven children, Michael Haverkamp of Laredo, Texas, Diane Haverkamp of St. Charles, Missouri, David and Susan (Stotts) Haverkamp of Springville, Iowa, Timothy Haverkamp and fiancé Chris Ideus of Lincoln, Nebraska, Jolene and David Jacobson of Union, Kentucky, Brian Haverkamp of Baileyville, Kansas and Kristi Haverkamp of Chandler, Arizona; and eight grandchildren, Nathan, Jennifer, Emily, and Justin Jacobson, Kayla and Quinn Haverkamp, Janet Michelle and Jeffrey Michael Haverkamp.
