Bernard J. "Benny" Hulsing

Seneca, Kansas

Bernard J. “Benny” Hulsing, 91, of Seneca, KS passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026 at Life Care Center in Seneca.

Benny was born on March 8th, 1934, the son of Henry and Ida (Gellhaus) Hulsing on the family farm west of St. Benedict, KS. Benny was the eleventh child in a family of thirteen children. He attended St. Mary’s Catholic school in St. Benedict, graduating from the eighth grade. After graduating, Benny went to work on the family’s farm. He lived and worked on the farm right up to the day he got married.

On November 10, 1962, Benny married Avis Kay Holland at St. Mary’s Catholic church in St. Benedict. They lived on his family’s farm for another year before moving to their own farm east of Seneca where they raised 3 children. He farmed for himself and worked for other farmers. They celebrated 63 years of marriage.

Benny went to work for Nemaha County in the early 1980’s, where he worked on the road and bridge crew and then later for the recycling center. He continued farming throughout his employment. He retired from Nemaha County at the age of 75. He then went to work part time for Koch and & Co. until the age of 85.

Benny was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. One of his favorite pastimes was tractor pulls, participating in his younger years and winning several trophies. In his later years he enjoyed being a spectator cheering on his son and brother-in-law. He also enjoyed going to the casino and spending time with his family. He was well known for his colorful language.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Ida Hulsing; daughter, Teresa Dodd in 2018; son-in-law, James Dodd in 2013; four brothers, Celestine “Sally” Hulsing, Emil Hulsing, Henry “Hank” Hulsing, & Joseph “Joe” Hulsing; seven sisters, Henrietta Holthaus, Mary Stallbaumer, Florence Kohake, Mildred Kohake, Ida Rose Sextro, Elsa “Elsie” McGuire, and Marcelline “Marcy” Meyer.

He is survived by his wife Kay; daughter Barb (Jay) Luckeroth of Topeka, son John (Carol) Hulsing of Seneca; seven granddaughters, Nichole Koch, Melissa Williamson, Kristina Buckhalter, Rachel Saunders, Hannah Cole, Kayla McLinn and Chloe Luckeroth; one brother, Victor “Bud” Hulsing; four great-grandsons, five great-granddaughters and another great-grandchild on the way.

A rosary will be prayed on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 2 P.M. at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Joel Haug at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca on Monday, March 2, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. The burial will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in St. Benedict, Kansas. Memorials can be made in Benny’s memory to the Life Care, sent in care of the family.
