Alvin T. Hammes

Seneca, Kansas

Alvin Theodore Hammes, 97, passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at the Crestview Nursing and Residential Center in Seneca.

He was born April 5, 1928, in Seneca, Kansas, the oldest child of Lawrence and Cornelia (Cora) Stallbaumer Hammes. He attended grade school in Baileyville, Kansas and received his GED later on in Kansas City. He served in the Kansas National Guard Battery A, 154th Field Artillery Battalion for 8 years with the rank of SFC.

During his career, he worked at various jobs in construction, sheet metal fabrication shops and for the last 19 years before retiring at Research Products of Salina, Kansas as a shop manager in Kansas City.

On August 17, 1971 Alvin married Sara Habing at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Roeland Park, Kansas. They made their home in Westwood, Kansas along with their adopted daughter Linda. The couple moved to Seneca along with Linda after they retired in April of 2000.

Alvin was a very talented woodworker and had a workshop in his home where he handcrafted beautiful furniture for his family home and also for other family members.

Alvin was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, St. Joseph Society and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus council 1769.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sara, his parents, brothers Gerald, Donald, Leo and Kenneth, sisters Cleta Mae Haverkamp, Dorothy Schraad and Bernice Heiman.

Alvin is survived by his daughter Linda Hammes of Seneca, brothers Galen of Seneca, Larry of Topeka and sisters Mary Rose Feuerborn of Richmond, and Jeanette Becker of Seneca.

Rosaries will be prayed at 2pm on Thursday, January 22nd at Lauer Funeral Home, Seneca. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11am on Friday, January 23rd at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, Seneca. Burial will be at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Baileyville, Kansas.

Memorials can be given in Alvin’s memory to Sts. Peter & Paul Church or Best Life Community Services (formerly Nemaha County Training Center).
