Robert Lee Schmelzle
Seneca, Kansas
10/31/1945 - 06/02/2026
Robert Lee Schmelzle, 80, of Seneca, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital following a brief illness.
Robert was born October 31, 1945, in Seneca, Kansas, the son of Gene and Mary Aziere Schmelzle. He grew up east of Seneca on the family farm and carried those roots of faith, family, and hard work throughout his life.
Robert proudly served his country. He enlisted in the United States Air Force on August 25, 1966, completing basic training in Lackland, Texas. He was later assigned to the service and supply division of the U-2 program in Tucson, Arizona. His service included time overseas in Viet Nam and continued as a member of the Army National Guard, a commitment he held with great pride. Robert held the grade of a Specialist 6 with Expert Rifle Badge & Bar.
On February 4, 1967, he was united in marriage to Laura May Wessel. Together they were blessed with eight children and built a life centered on family. In 1969, Robert and Laura, along with their two young sons, made their home in Axtell, Kansas, where they would spend many years raising their family.
Robert devoted 35 years of his life to Nemaha-Marshall Electric Cooperative Association, Inc., working as a lineman. He was known for his strong work ethic and dedication to serving his community.
He was a man who loved the outdoors. Gardening and fishing brought him great enjoyment, and he found peace and fulfillment working with his hands and spending time in nature. Above all, Robert treasured time with his family.
Robert was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church, the Axtell Knights of Columbus, and the American Legion. Through the American Legion, he honored fellow veterans as a member of the Axtell color guard, a role he fulfilled with dignity and respect.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Mary Schmelzle; his brothers, Jack (John), Don, and William; brothers-in-law Jack Severin, Jon Moore; and his son, Daniel.
Robert leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory, including his former spouse, Laura Schmelzle; his children: Brian (Kim), Kirby (Kristin), Clinton (Dana), Loren (Amy), Carla, Wade (Beth), Allen; along with 27 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A rosary will be prayed Thursday, June 4, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. at Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Robert’s life was one of service—to his country, his community, and most especially his family—and his legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Axtell American Legion.
