Gary Lee Sweetland

Seneca, Kansas

01/06/1947 - 07/08/2021

Gary L. Sweetland, 74, of Seneca, died on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca.

Gary was born on January 6, 1947, the oldest child of Lorin L. and Agnes W. Olberding Sweetland. Gary grew up in Seneca and attended school at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School in Seneca and graduated in 1965.

Gary enjoyed sporting events and was the sportscaster for Nemaha Valley sports and the Seneca Legion Baseball Team. Gary was the sacristan of the church, where he helped with the daily Mass, he was a lector and a communion distributor. Gary had a lifelong fascination with trains and the outer space.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lorin on October 5, 1999 and Agnes on May 27, 2002; a brother, Daniel on June 9, 1988; and a still born brother.

Gary is survived by his sister, Trudy (Jim) Olberding of Seneca, nieces and nephews.

A rosary will be prayed at 7 PM at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca on Monday, July 12, 2021. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 10 AM at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca. Burial will be in the church cemetery in Seneca.

Memorials are for Sts. Peter and Paul School, sent in care of the family.

    So sorry for the loss of your brother. I remember as kids when we all played together at Howser’s. Gary was a little older and tried to keep us in line…LOL. He was a familiar face every day at school….very fond memories.
