Robert “Bob” H. Schulte, 72, of Baileyville, died Thursday,
February 1, 2007 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka. He was transferred
there after suffering a head injury which resulted from a fall on the
ice at his home Wednesday evening.
Robert
was born December 25, 1934 in Axtell, KS, the son of Melvin and Anna
Stueve Schulte. He grew up in Baileyville, and graduated from Baileyville
High School in 1952. He entered the U.S. Marines in 1953 and was stationed
at Ft Pendleton, CA. serving as a sergeant for his county until 1956.
He received the National Defense Service award and the Good Conduct
Medal. After his discharge, he made his permanent home in Baileyville.
While in the Marines, he met his future
wife. On July 27, 1957 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in San Francisco,
CA, he married Anita Fuentes; she survives the home. To this union four
children were born. Robert took over the bus service from his father,
and transported schoolchildren for the Baileyville District 451, for
over 42 years and continued until the date of his death. He owned the
service station Bob’s Conoco in Baileyville and Schulte Oil, a
fuel delivery service, for many years.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Baileyville, and the Earle W. Taylor Post #21 of the American
Legion in Seneca for 16 years. Bob served on the Nemaha Valley Community
Hospital Board during the development and building of the new hospital.
Other boards he served on were the Rural Water District Water Board,
Marion Township Board, and the Sacred Heart Church Board. Throughout
his life Bob was active in his community. He had many interests and
enjoyed traveling with his wife, drinking coffee with his buddies, fishing,
and boating. Robert was an avid reader, loved to polka, and treasured
time with his grandchildren and his dog Rascal.
Bob was always a very giving person, donating
over 11 gallons of blood in his lifetime. Even in his passing he continued
his giving tradition, he was an organ donor so he will continue to live
on in many people.
