Joannes A. John Heinen

Kelly, Kansas

Many good friends and relatives mourn the passing Saturday morning, October 13, 1962, of John Heinen, good senior citizen of the Kelly, Kansas community.

Mr. Heinen was past 92, and had been ill about a week with complications of age. His passing was at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ambrose “Agnes” Wilhelm, Baileyville, Kansas.

Mr. Heinen was born in the old country at Budesheim, Rhine Province, Germany, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Heinen. His parents did not come to this country.

His parents were deceased. John Heinen was about 17 when he came to America, to the home of an uncle in Humphrey, Nebraska.

On April 25, 1898, he and Anna Frances Schurmann were married at Lacona, Iowa, and the family came to Nemaha County, Kansas, in 1907. Mrs. Heinen passed away May 14, 1951. Mr. Heinen had lived on the farm near Kelly, Kansas for 55 years. His church and his family were special interests.

The children are Elizabeth, Mrs. Tony Wilhelm of Seneca, Kansas; Catherine, Mrs. Henry Sextro of Muscotah, Kansas; Agnes, Mrs. Ambrose Wilhelm of Baileyville, Kansas; Jacob of Centralia, Kansas; Allie of Denton, Kansas; Joe of Seneca, Kansas; George of the home; Ed of Huron, Kansas; Susanna, Mrs. Anthony Huerter of Seneca, Kansas; Marie, Mrs. Ivan Conley of Centralia, Kansas, and Raymond of Goff, Kansas. Three children, Amelia, Henry and Leonard are deceased. There are 63 grandchildren and 66 great-grandchildren. Mr. Heinen had two sisters, and a brother, who preceded him in death.

He had remained active for his age, made his own garden, kept house for his son, George. He was member of St. Bede’s Catholic Church, Kelly, Kansas and of the St. Bede’s Sodality. Father Vincent Wavada offered the Mass Monday, at the St. Bede’s Catholic Church. Grandsons were servers at the Mass; Virgil Heinen, James Heinen, Ronald Heinen, Richard Heinen and John Heinen. Grandsons were also pallbearers; Gilbert Heinen, Robert Heinen, LeRoy Heinen, Carl Wilhelm, Larry Sextro and Maurice Huerter.

Many grandchildren from a distance came to attend the service. Among the relatives from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schurman, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Schurman, Mrs. Vitus Schurman, Mrs. Henry Schurman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Schurman, Mrs. Gervase Ripperger, Mrs. Fabian Huerter, Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Rippergerger, Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wadle, all of Iowa; Mrs. Charles Protzman, Mrs. Lucy Frueh, Ed. Walk of Maryville, Missouri; Mrs. and Mrs. Kraus, Mrs. and Mrs. Henry Braun from Rosholt, South Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. John Schnitzler of Humphrey, Nebraska; Mrs. Bernard Braun of Cedar Rapids, Nebraska. Mrs. Clara Heinen and Lambert, Mrs. Shirley Rice of Valley Falls, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilhelm from Effingham, Kansas; Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Wilhelm, Horton, Kansas, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Nolte, Onaga, Kansas. There were many other relatives and friends from the neighboring communities.
