Damon L. Quigley

Corning, Kansas

06/24/2007 - 01/19/2021

Damon Lucas Quigley, age 13, entered into eternal life on January 19, 2021. He was born on June 24, 2007 in Onaga, KS. He is the youngest child of Ron and Brenda (Adams) Quigley of Corning, KS.

Damon was a seventh grader at Centralia School. He had lots of friends of all ages and was known for being a kind, helpful, thoughtful young man. He had a contagious smile and loved to make others laugh. He was the first person to lend a hand or make someone feel welcome and wanted. He loved little kids and was known to go out of his way to include them. He loved helping his grandparents when they needed an extra hand.

He loved playing sports of all kinds. He played third base for the Corning Lions baseball team and was looking forward to playing on a traveling team this summer. He came pretty close to hitting his first over the fence homerun last year. His goal was to hit more out than his older brother had. This past fall was his first year wearing a Centralia Junior High Panther football jersey. Before his first game, he told his mom, “I’ve waited my whole life for this”.  He was most recently a member of the Centralia Junior High basketball team where he was playing post and bringing down rebounds. A few years ago, he convinced his parents to let him try wrestling. They knew nothing about the sport, but he picked up on it quickly and his parents learned a little. He loved being part of the Onaga Wrestling Club where he made so many new friends.

Damon loved the water and spent lots of time on his grandparents’ boat at the Centralia Lake. He spent hours being pulled around the lake on a tube before he would jump off with his signature back flip. He loved family game night and would play cards and board games every day if time would have allowed. He loved cooking and baking but struggled with cleaning the kitchen afterward. He enjoyed playing his PS4 with his cousins and friends. Another favorite pastime of his included opening his sister’s bedroom door, throwing a random object at her, and closing the door before she could retaliate.

Despite everything good in his life, Damon must have been smiling through a pain so great that he could not talk about it. He took his own life while home alone.

He leaves behind a family who will love and miss him eternally. He is survived by his parents, Ron and Brenda, an older brother Noah, and older sister Taegan. His maternal grandparents, Roger and Judy Adams of Corning. His aunts and uncles Donald and Sandy Quigley of Billings, MT, Ryan and Melissa Adams of Topeka, Janelle and Jim Stockwell of Shawnee, and Jeremy and Laura Conley of Havensville. His cousins: Christopher Quigley, Valerie Quigley, Dawson Adams, Camden Conley, Delaney Adams, Landon Stockwell, Adalei Conley, Hailee Stockwell, and Ivan Conley; extended family, and too many friends to list.

He was preceded in death by his great-grandparents Urban & Darlene Haug and Raymond & Opal Adams, Everett & Lula Gordon, and Ray & Virginia Quigley; his grandparents Don Quigley and Marjorie Quigley; and his uncle Jason Adams.

Pallbearers will be Dawson Adams, Camden Conley, Landon Stockwell, Kason Saenz, Paxton Bowers, and Ben Haverkamp. Honorary pallbearers will be the Centralia Class of 2026.

Rosary and visitation will be at St. Patrick’s church in Corning on Sunday, January 24 at 2pm. Mass of the Christian burial will also be at St. Patrick’s on Monday, January 25 at 10am. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. There will be no seating restrictions in church but masks are encouraged. Memorials have been designated for the Corning Ball Association and the Centralia Schools.

The family requests that everyone attending the rosary and funeral wear their favorite team shirt along with jeans, sweats, or leggings because Damon would want us to be comfortable.

A Rosary will be prayed on Sunday, January 24, 2021 at 2PM at St. Patrick’s Church in Corning.

The Funeral Mass will be at 10AM on Monday, January 25,2021 at St Patrick’s Church in Corning.

A MASK should be worn to these services.

Having lived through this in May of 2019, I know, no words can come close to your pain. No, you will never have all the answers. Someone sent our family a letter and in that letter it said, they stayed until they could not stay any longer. You will never move on, just move forward. Keeping your family and this young man in my prayers.

Thinking of you all. My parents lost a child so they knew the hurt but we don’t understand why He takes them home. I remember when you were pregnant with him and his baby shower. Those memories will sustain you while you grieve. With sympathy.

I cried my eyes out reading Damon’s obituary. He was so energetic and athletic in PE. If I had to call him down for getting carried away sometimes he would always respond with respect and a smile. I can see him now going all out at every game or contest we played. He was a good young man and my heart breaks for him and all of you. There wouldn’t be the pain if there hadn’t been the joy and Damon brought joy to my life as I know he did for his family. I am so terribly sorry for this tragedy. I feel lucky that I got to teach him for five years! Love and Hugs to all of You from the Tennals!

I know this is late and I apologize, but you haven’t been far from my thoughts and prayers. I didn’t know Damon, but I wish I had. He sounds like he had the love of life in him and he enjoyed it while that love was alive and well. I know there are people for whom life is just too hard and there’s not much one can do to convince a young mind that it may not be like that forever. I have all confidence that he is playing ball in Heaven and probably playing pranks on Jesus who would just shake His head, smile, and wrap Damon up in his big, loving arms. My prayers continue for your family. I can’t imagine your grief. Georgia Gudenkauf, Seneca, Ks.
