(I originally posted this on Facebook but would like to share it here as well.)

    Rest in peace, Ben Heideman

Some of my earliest memories are when my bachelor uncles Ben, Charlie and Ray Heideman would come for a visit. I remember walking around our farm in Kansas with them when I was six or seven proudly showing them our pigs and calves and cows and our garden. I remember lots of laughter whenever they were around.

One of the wonderful things about family is that they are always there – at first communions & confirmations, at family reunions, at graduations & weddings and later at funerals. I remember Ben, Charlie and Ray at many of these events in my family. They would always make a point to ask me about my life or compliment me on some achievement.

Ray passed away in 2013 just a couple months after my dad died. Charlie died almost a year ago.

I was happy when I heard that Ben had moved into the same assisted living center where my mom lives several months ago. I got to see and visit with him last summer during my last visit to see mom.

I had made plans to visit my mom again this week but had to cancel them at the last minute when there was a Covid outbreak at her assisted living center. While still dangerous, with the vaccine, this is not as catastrophic as it would’ve been a year ago.

However, sadly, Ben got Covid and died a couple days later. I am honored that my mom and her surviving siblings have asked me to be one of Ben’s pallbearers at his funeral on Thursday.

We are so sad to learn of Ben’s passing. He was so kind to my folks, Eugene and Lois Visser, while Mom stayed at Country Place. We were so touched by the residents at Country Place, how they prayed for my Mom while she was in the hospital. She passed away on Oct. 20th. We were all so grateful for Ben and Ann’s kindness to our family. May you rest in peace, Ben, and we will pray for God’s peace and comfort to carry the famiy through the days ahead.
