Anna M. Niehues,
88, of Rt. 2, Goff, Kansas, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at the KU Medical
Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She was transferred there from the Nemaha
Valley Community Hospital on Sunday. She had cancer.
She was born May 26, 1912, the daughter of Bernard, Sr. and Mary Knipper
Niehues, on the Niehues homestead southeast of Kelly, Kansas. She grew
up there and attended St. Bede's School at Kelly. One of fifteen children,
she was like a mother to the younger children in the family. As a young
woman, she stayed in the home of Mary and Gertrude Wempe in Seneca where
she learned to be a seamstress. Besides sewing, she worked in local
homes helping to care for families.
Later
she cared for her elderly parents, and following their deaths continued
to make her home with her brother, George, and sister, Erma, on the
Niehues homestead. Last May she fractured her leg and has been in ill
health since that time. She had also been in the Sabetha Hospital and
Crestview Manor in Seneca.
She was a member of St. Bede's Church and the
St. Ann's Altar Society at the church in Kelly.
Survivors are four brothers, Albert Niehues,
Edwin Niehues, and George Niehues all of Goff, and Robert Niehues of
Seneca; six sisters, Sr. M. Richardis, O.S.B. of Atchison, Kansas, Margaret
Boeckman of Onaga, Kansas, Antionette Hermesch of Seneca, Josepha Altenhofen
of Kelly, Evelyn Hutfles of Netawaka, Kansas, and Erma Niehues of Goff.
She was preceded in death by two brothers,
Bernard "Ben" Niehues, Jr., and John J. Niehues, two sisters, Agnes
Niehues and Alma Haverkamp.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30
A.M. Thursday at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. The burial will be in the
church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at the Lauer Funeral Home
in Seneca on Wednesday at 2 P.M. and 7 P.M She will lie in state at
the Funeral Home after 8:30 A.M. Wednesday.
Memorials may be given for St. Bede's Cemetery
and sent in care of the family.
