Hammes
Anna M. Hammes,
90, of Seneca, KS, died Thursday, August 14, 2003, at Crestview Manor
in Seneca where she had been a resident since November of 2000.
She
was born March 4, 1913, on the Niekamp homestead east of Baileyville,
KS, the daughter of Herman and Alice Larkin Niekamp. She attended Sacred
Heart School and helped on the family farm. She also did domestic work
for the Elmer Winterscheidt family in Seneca.
On May 4, 1941, she married Leonard H. Hammes
at Sacred Heart Church in Baileyville. They farmed north of Baileyville
until 1957 when they moved to a farm northeast of St. Benedict. In 1983
they retired from farming and moved to Seneca. Her husband, Leonard,
preceded her in death on July 8, 1987.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul
Church, St. Ann's Altar Society, the L.C.B.A., and the Nemaha County
Historical Society.
Survivors are a son Clayton Hammes and a daughter,
Nancy Uphaus, both of Topeka; three sisters, Louise Stuke, Aurelia Stallbaumer,
and Cecilia Niekamp, all of Seneca; six grandsons and three great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded
in death by two brothers, Paul Niekamp, an infant, on March 12, 1916,
and Elmer Niekamp on March 18, 2000.
The mass of Christian burial will be 10:30
A.M. Monday at Sts. Peter & Paul Church in Seneca. The burial will
be in the church cemetery. The rosary will be prayed at 2 P.M. Sunday
at the Lauer Funeral Home in Seneca.
Memorials may be given for the Nemaha County
Historical Society and sent in care of the family.
